The assumption that the RAF's reconnaissance aircraft, the Mosquito, could continue to range across Germany with impunity, was shattered on 25 th July 1944. A Mosquito belonging to the No.544 squadron barely escaped destruction after having been attacked in the first air-to-air encounter with the revolutionary new German fighter, the Messerschmitt Me-262.
