Beachy Head 1690: The Grand Alliance at Bay

With Louis XIV having escalated the rivalries between the great European powers into war, the Grand Alliance of England, the Dutch Republic and the Habsburg Monarchy found itself engaged in fragmented campaigns across much of the continent. Their respective navies were likewise deployed across the Mediterranean, Atlantic and English Channel. Naval strategies and objectives, however, were often unclear, due in large part to the rivalries that permeated the various levels of command.

Thus, when the English admiral, Torrington, encountered the superior French fleet in the Channel and sought to withdraw to safer waters, he was overruled by Queen Mary and her advisers and compelled to engage. With the combined English and Dutch fleet inferior to the French, defeat was perhaps inevitable. Although the battle was far from decisive—the English lost only one ship and the Dutch three—the result briefly engendered panic among the English populace, who feared an imminent invasion. The French admiral, Tourville, failed to exploit his success, allowing the English fleet to escape, and was subsequently relieved of his command. Torrington, meanwhile, was blamed for the defeat and court-martialled, only to be acquitted.
